CUBA - Teacher shortage crippling Cuba's schools
  •       http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/166B87AB96D58908?p=WORLDNEWS
  • ·      Cuba is having a shortage of teachers. Due to the decrease in the educational budget. In 2008 the budget consisted of 14.1% of the island GDP, in 2015 it dropped to 10.2%. 1800 schools were closed in that time frame and 40,000 teachers have left since 2007. The budget is effecting teacher’s salary. They receive only 533 pesos a year or $20 a month, and are overworked. 1.7 million students will start on the 4th and they only have 248,438 teachers.
  • ·      The main problem is that Raúl Castro keeps lowering the educational budget, making it difficult to find teachers willing to work for essentially nothing.
  • ·      Teachers, children, and parents are mainly affected. There is a domino effect going on, teachers are not getting paid so there is a shortage of teachers. Because there is a shortage of teachers, then the educational system is having to turn librarians into teachers. Kids are then not getting the best education or even a decent education. Over time the educational problem will become so large that no one is being properly education and Cubans economy will suffer.

  • ·      Your parents always tell you to eat your fruits and vegetables. However, a 2013 study from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported that 33% of adults consume less than one serving of fruits and vegetables per day. The reason supposedly is due to lack of tasty or freshness. There was another study found that frozen produce yielded higher nutrient content and lasted longer. If you purchase fresh produce, eat it as soon as you can because over time it losses nutritional value and becomes less fresh. Parents need to start listening to themselves talk and start eating right.
  • ·      America is considered the obese country. That is due to lack of healthy eating and lack of working out. 33% of adults do not eat the correct amount of nutrients a day, causing this obese nature in America.
  • ·      Right now parents have the problem of not eating right. However, kids do as they see, so later on in life when their parents are not telling them what to do, these kids will also not be eating healthy.
  • Brazil engulfed in a corruption scandal with plots as convoluted as a telenovela·      http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/166BA9E5D0D7C098?p=WORLDNEWS
  • ·      Brazil is having a huge corruption scandal, that started out as a simple money laundering scheme at a gas station. However, it has escalated to the highest level of government corruption. In August, Brazil’s House of Deputies ruled to not send corruption charges against President Termer to the Supreme Court. The investigation into this scandal has spanned into many interesting stories. There has been, a mysterious plane crash, Swiss bank accounts, hush money, tracking chips in bags of money, a robbery and a secret recording. One day this scandal will turn into the number one TV show on FX. As of now, only businessmen have been prosecuted. They were either placed under house arrest or sent to jail. Most politicians have been getting off scot free, with only a few serving jail time.
  • ·      The main problem is that the whole political system in Brazil is completely corrupted; from the highest level of politicians, to the lowest level businessmen. There has been death, shootings, recordings. Basically everything out of House of Cards, The Blacklist and Narcos.

  • ·     Everyone in Brazil if effected, the politicians, the businessmen and the voters. Also the 12 others countries were Brazilian companies were accused of paying bribes to win contracts and influence people.

Black women still earn less for the same work. No matter the job
  •       Nadine Rattray is a black woman who worked at a hospital for 5 years. She negotiated her salary up from $18 to $19 an hour. However, she found out that males will less experience were making $22 an hour. She was outraged! It turns out on average black women are paid 67 cents on the dollar relative to white men. Also unemployment rate is much higher for black women at 7.4% compared to 4.3% in Florida. This means when a black woman is fired, she will be unemployed longer. That leads to why they are afraid of asking for a raise which creates the pay gap.
  •       Black women are paid significantly less than women, and especially compared to men. Due to social bias it is harder for these women to get picked for a job. So when they are picked they are too afraid to negotiate their pay due to fear of unemployment. Creating essentially a domino effect, that leads to this outrageous pay gap.
  •       Women in general have a pay gap, but black women have it much more severely, because of social inequality.

South Florida threat gradually increasing as Irma strengthens

  •       Hurricane IRMA has strengthened and become a Category 3 storm. Throughout the week it is supposed to get even stronger. Late on Monday IRMA is supposed to turn west then northwest on Tuesday. Also on Tuesday the Caribbean’s are expected to be hit. Most meteorologist are having a tough time deciding were this storm is heading, but it is expected to hit parts of the East Coast. Puerto Rico as well as the Dominican Republic have started to prepare for the storm: getting supplies, clearing away road works, and cleaning out blockages of sewer drains.
  •      The problem of this hurricane is that it keeps escalating in strength and if it does hit land, those parts will be severely ruined.
  •       People in the Caribbean’s, Virgin Islands and the East Coast of the United States all should prepare for this hurricane.

  1. I found your first two opportunities very close to home. For one i love learning and always enjoyed school. It is incredibly unfortunate that kids in Cuba have to suffer because of budget cuts in schools. It seems as though a never ending cycle will be created of people not being educated and their economy struggling. The second opportunity about eating more fruits and vegetable also applies to me as i have always had bad eating habits. I am incredibly picky when it comes to vegetables. Eating healthy is a very hard habit to create but for someone who loves to cook I do my best to try new things.

  2. Your second opportunity is something I can relate to. I try to eat the best I can but sometimes it can be tough when a burger and fries sounds a lot better than a salad to me. Obesity is a terrible problem in the US and hopefully something can be done to make healthy habits easier to follow for everyone. Parents especially should be concerned with this because they are responsible for their children growing up with either good or bad habits.
